Many people believe that live-in nannies are supposed to be working round the clock whenever the situation demands. This is far from truth. These professionals cannot be expected at service all the time. Just like in any other profession, live-in nannies too have specific on and off-duty hours.

Many families look for this type of arrangement with the idea of major convenience, but the convenience does not translate into expecting a nanny to follow orders at any hour of the day.

Someone who works on a live-in basis may feel that he or she is not entitled to any such thing called overtime. The truth is Fair Labor Standards Act clearly states that live-in nannies must be paid for every single hour of the duty served just like people in any other occupation. They are also entitled to receive overtime for the extra worked hours.

Another common misconception is that these nannies are responsible for handling household activities. Individuals who are into childcare cannot be asked to do anything outside their circle of responsibilities. They are typically responsible for carrying out chores related to children’s care only. Unless an employer is willing to pay extra money for added responsibilities the employee cannot be expected to carry out chores like laundry management, meal preparation, or anything else for that matter.

Nannies that reside with families cannot be made to share living space with children. They must be provided with a separate living space that must be inclusive of all the essentials for daily living.

People think that live-in nannies may interfere with family’s personal matters. These professionals are only supposed to be available when employers need them, and after performing the tasks, they are expected to go back to their allocated accommodations. Even if they are present in the common area, nannies are supposed to follow hands-off approach.
